Spanish Horror "Rec" Better Than Blair Witch?

Spanish directors Jaume Balaguero, and Paco Plaza scarred their competition this past October with the release of Rec.

With a one million dollar budget they put their ancestor The Blair Witch Project to shame with a similar camera technique but with one major difference--it's actually scary. They'd like to call this style of shooting the first person perspective but it's really the effect all digital cameras give.

The film centers on a wannabe news reporter and her camera man that follow a fire department on what is suppose to be a routine call of an old woman said to be trapped by a fire in her apartment but instead bump into residents of this building infected by a ravenous strain of rabies.

I have to say that I have not seen this whole movie, because it has not been released in the US, only the various trailers playing on the world wide web and I must say it appears to kick ass.

I'm doing my best to showcase those rare horror movie gems that may slip under the radar if unchecked. And this is one you have got to see.

It's so good that before it was even released this wonderful country has decided to by the rights and make a remake called Quarantine. Hell they already attached directors John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle to the project.

Actually let me take it a step forward and tell the cast they already chose for the film: Jay Hernandez, Columbus Short, Steve Harris, and Jonathan Schaech. Iinterestingly enough this film will be released next October 2008, one year from the release of the original.

I live in Spain and watched this movie. What really makes the difference is... Yes, it is extremely scary. I have never been scared by horror movies before but this one, several months after watching it, still haunts me. It gives an extremely real impression and also explores the possibility of some sort of "zombie" virus being created and making people murder and eat other people like animals.

Another thing is that it also makes perfect sense, meaning there are no stupid loose ends that can't be easily explained, like there were in Cloverfield (Where the fuck did the monster come from?!, etc.)

Here in Hong Kong the movie <Rec> is to be released on AUgust 28 2008. Oh hell I had watched the <Quarantine> trailers several times and then I watched the <Rec> trailer in a cinema a few days ago. THen I wonder which one is the original one, coz I respect the original ones always. Now I know it's <Rec>. Great. So I'll watch <Rec> next week, and then <Quarantine> in Oct. Euro and Hollywood dressing on the same cuisine. Interesting for a movie fans like me.

REC was awesome! I was totally amping when I left the cinema. Went to see it at the film festival, had no idea what it was about, it started pretty slow, first 20 minutes I'm thinking this is pretty average.... then Bam!, it just takes off! People in the cinema were squirming all over their seats and letting out involuntary screams and my heart was racing for about 20mins when it was over. The funniest thing was an elderly lady(65+) came in and sat down a couple of rows in front of me just before it started. When I went to leave at the end she wasnt moving and I actually had a moment when I thought, shit its killed her, but when I stopped to check on her, she was just sitting there grinning from ear to ear! IT WAS AWESOME!

Quarantine is based on the same thing as REC, but Quarantine is the English version of REC. Personally I think REC is a lot scarier.

Sorry but WHAT!

First of all Quarantine is NOT a British film, it is American. Britain would not soil such an artisticly perfect Spanish Horror that [Rec.] is.

Secondly Quarantine is an uninspired shot by shot (yes i realise that this term doesn't apply fully becaus of the handheld camera style but its the principal) COPY of a fantastic piece of filming.

It was only copied by America (like many other Horror films, like The Eye etc) because America wanted to make easy profit from a fantastic film, without putting any effort in. Leaving only an uninspired copy. The word remake is even to good for Quarantine.

Further more the horror in [Rec.] I believe comes from its amateur camera style. The relatively low budget (in terms of normal budgets for horror films)only increased its beleivability and therefore horror.

Quarantine loses this horror by having a massive budget, allowing for more money to be thrown around on un neccesary background detail (SWAT teams blocking off windows rather than just the sheets). Losing the sense of realism and "hollywoodising" the film.

Also the person that they got to play the reporter (anyone know her name?) cannot act as well as the Spanish Lady (I think her name is Manuela Velasco). Also the fact that you get to see the cameraman's face ruins the personal aspect of the audience feeling as though they are there.

Please consider these points I have made before making ridiculous assumptions that have no basis in facts, just because you have to read the subtitles doesn't mean it's not a good film.

Boom. I shot you with word bullets.
